Film; Washington Post gazetecilerine, tarihe Watergate skandalı olarak geçen olayla ilgili bilgi sızdıran Mark Felt'in hikayesini anlatıyor. 1972 yılında yaşanan Watergate skandalı dönemin ABD başkanı Richard Nixon'ın, rakip parti olan Demokrat Parti'nin telefon konuşmalarını dinlemek için Watergate binasına beş hırsızın sızarak mikrofon yerleştirmesi sonucu ortaya çıkan bir krizdir. Bu skandalın sonunda Nixon, görevinden istifa etmiştir. Yapımda, Mark Felt'i birçok aksiyon filminde oynamış olan Liam Neeson; eşi olan Audrey Felt'i ise Diane Lane canlandırmaktadır. Filmin senaristi ve yönetmeni olan Peter Landesman; daha önce Concussion (2015) ve Parkland /JFK Suikasti (2013) filmlerini de yazıp yönetmiştir.
